This Spring Waukee High School received word that A Cappella Choir has again been invited to perform for the American Choral Director’s Association Convention. This year’s regional event takes place in Minneapolis, Minnesota March 3-6, 2010. An invitation to this event signifies the highest honor that any vocal music program can achieve. A Cappella Choir has been honored in this way 4 times since 2005 at the state, regional and/or national level by ACDA.
Many types of choirs are chosen to perform at the conference. Children’s ensembles, high school, college and professional choirs are all selected, not only from the United States, but also from around the world. Waukee students will sing as an official part of the convention program to demonstrate musical excellence at its highest level for the entire professional organization. A Cappella will sing its concert session in Minneapolis’ Orchestra Hall. The students will also have the opportunity to hear another selected high school and many of the world’s finest college and professional ensembles.
A Cappella choir is also commissioning Minnesota composer David Dickau to compose an original work to be premiered at this event. Sources of funding for this exciting opportunity are currently being explored. The selection process for these events is rigorous and involves considering a musical ensemble’s track record over a three year time period.
